    The Origin of MUNI LIB

    Lecture

    The presentation presents the development of the identity of the library network at Masaryk University, from independently functioning faculty libraries without central coordination to the realization of the need for cooperation in the form of interlibrary working groups. In the last two years, the libraries at MU have united their efforts, established cooperation with other university departments and participated in events such as the Brno Libraries Day. A new logo, claim, website and communication channels are also part of the transformation of the libraries.​

    EOSC implementation in Czechia and its implication for academic institutions

    Lecture

    Data, data, more data😊. The implementation of EOSC (European Open Science Cloud) in the Czech Republic is reaching the milestone when Czech researchers are going to be able to store, share, and re-use data within the National Data Infrastructure, currently under construction. The presentation will present the history of the Czech approach to national data management topics, the current status of the Czech EOSC implementation, and its implications for the academic institutions within the country. The second part will be a Q&A session to have a more collaborative discussion.​

    Prevention from publishing in predatory journals: our seven years experience

    Lecture

    The presentation will summarize our discussion about a method of recognizing predatory journals and seven years of experience with our service provided to researchers at Masaryk University. Unlike other authors who prefer using Beall's List or black-/white-lists, we apply a three-step model of journal evaluation based on checking ten formal criteria, recommendations for content analysis, and getting information about the journal background.

    The presentation will briefly introduce the so-called Internal Methodology of the Faculty of Arts of MU, its historical background and development. Machine processing of data and their subsequent use (primary and secondary) has been the responsibility of the Central Library of the Faculty of Arts MU for 4 years, and the last year was marked by major system modifications under the new faculty management. The main part of the presentation will focus on the supporting role of the library in testing the hypotheses of responsible academic officials, and also on further work with the already processed data, which, apart from the distribution of funds, are also used as feedback for the heads of departments, as primary and supporting data in the preparation of bibliometric analyses for the faculty management, and also as teaching material for future librarians.

    The Faculty of Economics and Administration publishes two series of academic texts, which the library helps to publish. These are Working Papers and Policy Reports in the field of economics, i.e. preprints of scientific articles in the first case, and texts to help policy decision-making in the second case. The presentation summarizes what the library needs to do to ensure that these texts are published and indexed.

    This two-part workshop consists of a lecture led by Filip Lux in which we will break down the complexities behind AI technologies as well as wonder what AI's newly found popularity and innovations in generative AI mean for libraries. In the second part of the workshop, led by Lucie Racyn, we'll practically test some of the apps after we go over some basic rules for writing a prompt. After the introduction, we'll work in teams in a simulated online environment, where we'll recreate real-world library scenarios. Each team will have a unique challenge to tackle using AI tools. Some experience with generative AI tools is welcome but not necessary. Each part will take 90 minutes. Participants should bring their own laptops.​

    The presentation will showcase the learning and development of Masaryk University employees as one of the factors supporting their well-being. Participants will get to know the Competence Development Centre (CERPEK), a specialized workplace that develops a professional competences of Masaryk University employees. At the same time, the Belong project will be introduced, in which Masaryk University participates as one of the five universities. The project is aimed at supporting belonging, inclusion and well-being.​

    The role of body awareness in well being

    Workshop

    This workshop is focused both on psychological and physical well being. You will learn how much are these two systems connected and how exactly they influence each other. You will experience the role of body awareness in well being and get information and examples how to use it in daily life. You will get specific and useful tips to increase you psychological and physical well being especially if you have a sedentary job. You will also learn how to minimaze musculoskeletal problems due to sedentary lifestyle according to the individual needs of the participants.​

    So-called Teiresias Library provides access to study materials in suitable formats, i.e. those that help visually impaired students work effectively with required study texts. Even after the services of the Centre were extended to students with other typesof disabilities, the library has remained mostly as a service to visually impaired students, or students with impairment of fine motor skills, who have difficulties using standard library documents.​

    The library was established on 1 March 2007 and serves the following institutions: Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Science (Chemistry, Biochemistry and Biology), Faculty of Sports Studies and the Central European Institute of Technology (CEITEC).

One of the main objectives of our meeting is to talk diversity and differences, as well as similarities.
To get to know more about what our libraries and librarian jobs are like, we ask all participants to prepare a short presentation. Try to follow instructions given below:

  • 15–20 minutes + 5 minutes discussion with other participants
  • MS PowerPoint or any other presentation tool (Canva, Prezi etc.)
  • Include features of your library, describe your uniqueness
  • Tell us about special projects you take part in
  • Mention all challenges your library faces
  • Speak about your hardship or failed projects – why you struggle, what you learn from failures
  • Tell us anything you belive is worth sharing or discussing
  • Describe your job – what it is like at present, how it has changed during your librarian career, how it is going to possibly develop in the future

RNDr. Miroslav Bartošek, CSc.

Head of Library Information Centre


Miroslav Bartošek has been a member of the MU Department of Computer Technology since 1981. He started his career as a system programmer and since 1991 he has been involved in IT support of MU libraries. He founded and for more than a quarter of a century headed Library Information Centre - a methodological and system centre for library support. He is currently involved in the coordination of the purchase of EIR for science, research and teaching at MU, cooperates in the implementation of open science at MU and is also the main expert guarantor of the national CARDS project aimed at the acquisition and deployment of the next-generation Library Platform for a consortium of academic and research libraries in the Czech Republic.

Information Literacy Specialist, Open Science methodologist, Central Library, Faculty of Arts


Stanislav studied History and Upper Secondary School Teacher Training in History, but is now currently working at the Central Library of the Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University, as a faculty guarantor of The Register of Information on Results, lecturer of Information Education, Open Science methodologists and support in the field of scientometrics and scientific publishing.


 

Mgr. Jiří Kratochvíl, Ph.D.

Head of the University Campus Library


He started working at the Masaryk University Campus Library, where he became a head of the library in 2015. He is involved in information literacy activities for science and medicine students. He also specializes in Scholarly Journal Predatory Attributes Occurrence Analysis. He published about both topics in local and international journals indexed in Web of Science or Scopus.


 

Mgr. Iva Lízalová

Head of the Personal Competence Development Unit


Studied social pedagogy at the Tomas Bata University in Zlín and IMS Brno, she acquired management and lecturing skills during her long years of work in the pharmaceutical business. Specializing as a lecturer in communication and sales skills, personality typology, assertive communication, managing objections, and conflict situations, she has completed a course in experiential pedagogy and is a professional coach. Now applying her extensive experience in managing training departments, leading people, and implementing strategic training projects at CERPEK, she focuses on the development of MU employees. When implementing training activities, she ensures that training needs and objectives are met, taking pride in her individual approach and contact with employees. Additionally, she leads the L&D Coordinators Working Group.


 

RNDr. Filip Lux

Researcher at Centre for Biomedical Image Analysis, Faculty of Informatics MU


A researcher in the field of artificial intelligence and biomedical image processing. In a workday, he trains his neural networks to process images of living cells. PhD candidate at Faculty of Informatics Masaryk University.


 

Mgr. Ing. Jiří Marek

Head of the EOSC CZ Secretariat / Open Science Manager MU


Jiří Marek works as the head of the EOSC CZ secretariat, where he ensures the implementation of the European Open Science Cloud in the Czech Republic, and at the same time, holds the position of Open Science Manager at Masaryk University. He is one of the initiators of the Brno Open Source Declaration, which seeks to create a National Open Source Program Office for the public sector and academia. He has an education in chemistry with a specialization in hydrogen technologies and ICT law, focusing on Open Access, Open Agenda, and copyright law.


 

Mgr. Lukáš Plch

Librarian-specialist, University Campus Library


He graduated from the Department of Information and Library Studies at the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University in Brno and currently works at the University Campus Library at the same university. He has been involved in information education since 2010, specialising in information support for science and research, and is himself a PhD student at the Department of Educational Sciences.


 

Mgr. Jiří Poláček, Ph.D.

Head of Scientific Information Centre, Faculty of Economics and Administration


Jiří Poláček is a graduate in mathematics, computer science, and pedagogy, but he has been working in a library for over twenty years, currently as its head. He is interested in data analytics, information literacy, support in the field of open science, and, most recently, in the strategic development of library services at Masaryk University.


 

Mgr. et Mgr. Lucie Racyn

Consultant and AI methodologist, Open Science methodologist, Central Library, Faculty of Arts


Lucie is a librarian at the Faculty of Arts Central Library and is concerned mostly with the use of AI in the academic sphere, in research, and in tertiary education, with a focus on critical thinking and effectiveness. The rest of her work time is filled with Open Science and reference librarianship.


 

Mgr. Tereza Schwarzová Matýsová

Guarantor of Education at Central Library, Faculty of Arts


Tereza studied library science at the Department of Information Studies and Librarianship at FoA MU. At the faculty of Arts' Central Library, she is in charge of managing information education. She mainly teaches courses focused on critical work with information and effective reading strategies. Tereza also deals with research strategies, citations, citation ethics, or mindmaps.

Mgr. Bc. Kateřina Smolková

Psychologist, physiotherapist and fitness trainer


Originally a fitness trainer that wanted to understand better the problems of her clients, so she started studying physiotherapy at Faculty of Sport Studies at Masaryk University. During her studies, she fell for psychosomatics, so she started studying psychology at Faculty of Arts as well. Currently a PhD candidate at the Department of Medical Psychology and Psychosomatics at Faculty of Medicine at Masaryk University and owner of a fitness studio justMOVE.


 

Mgr. Taťána Škarková

Head of the Central Library, Faculty of Science


In 2007 she graduated in Information Studies and Librarianship at the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University in Brno. Since March 2008 she has been working as the Head of the Central Library of the Faculty of Science of Masaryk University in Brno. She has been working on various projects related to the retrocataloguing of disciplinary collections and the provision of professional and scientific resources.


 

Mgr. Vojtěch Velísek

Marketing and Information Education specialist, Central Library, Faculty of Science


Studied Czech Language, Literature and Intercultural Communication at MUNI, where he looked into credibility in communication. Currently studies at the Department of Information and Library Studies at MUNI and works at the Central Library of the Faculty of Science. He teaches Digital Competencies & Tools, Information Literacy in higher education environments and he is interesterd in service design.


 

Mgr. Jitka Vidláková, Ph.D.

Development and education specialist


Originally an academic in the field of educational sciences, she later gained qualifications in lecturing and management of further education, becoming an L&D enthusiast. With experience in leading or being involved in staff development and training projects, she started her cooperation with CERPEK as a lecturer and later took on the role of organizing training activities. Currently, she is in charge of the communication area, managing the content of the website and promoting CERPEK. Additionally, she leads and is a team member of a project focused on the wellbeing and inclusiveness of employees and students at MU.


 

Mgr. Jan Vokřál

ICT Specialist, Central Library, Faculty of Science


His academic background includes information science and librarianship. He has collaborated on a project on digital interactive stories in the education environment. Currently he works as an ICT specialist at the Central Library of the Faculty of Science at MUNI. In addition to managing technical equipment and organizing digitization in the library, he is involved in education in the area of information literacy.

Being teachers’ favourite sitting in the front of the classroom, Klára has always struggled to fit in. Her rebel soul led her to Japanese Philology studies at Palacky University, Olomouc, from where she escaped to Japan, from where she escaped to her hometown of Austerlitz, to realize she is no fit for business environment. So, she was on the run again, settling in Brno this time, where she hoped to find her niche in the Central Library, Faculty of Science, MUNI. In love with the concrete jungle, in hate with the always-sulking Czechs, at a loss to know who she really is, Klára is still on the run. She currently deals with her persistent kidhood, delayed adolescence and premature mid-life crisis. All at once.
